About The Course:

The “Advanced SOGIESC” course takes you on an in-depth journey to explore gender and sexual diversity through a critical and inclusive lens. By focusing on lived experiences, intersectionality, and comprehensive queer communication, the course aims to expand traditional understandings of identity, attraction, and relationships. It also sheds light on concepts such as privilege, power, and gender dysphoria, while providing analytical and communication tools that foster empowerment and advocacy within communities and beyond.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the different types of attraction and relationships and understand the diverse spectrum of sexual orientations.
  • Explain the diversity of sexual characteristics beyond the binary framework and differentiate between gender dysphoria, body dysmorphic disorder, and gender euphoria.
  • Define and analyze gender classifications, diverse gender identities, and culturally specific gender identities.
  • Explain concepts such as intersectionality, forms of power including language, privilege, and their historical and political influences on gender identity.

About Helem:

Helem is the first LGBTQIA+ rights organization in the Arab world, officially established in Beirut, Lebanon in 2001. Its mission is to lead the struggle for the liberation of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Intersex, Transgendered, Queer (LGBTQIA+) and other people with non-conforming sexualities and/or gender identities in Lebanon and the MENA region from all sorts of violations of their individual and collective civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights.
